Pottery Basics Series

This class is required for everyone who works in the studio. It must be taken before scheduling independent studio time or intermediate / advanced lessons.

The goal of this class is to get you ready to work comfortably and independently in the studio. It is the perfect class for those who are new to ceramics or tried pottery long ago. It is also an opportunity to learn how to work in this particular studio which may function differently than other studios. You will learn how to use the tools and equipment, studio logistics, and how to clean up. After taking the basic series, and understanding the studio guidelines, you are welcome to purchase clay by the bag and work independently in the studio by appointment.

You will be guided through three 1.5 hour sessions in a small group: hand building, the wheel, and glazing. At the end of the three-class series you can expect to go home with several custom pieces and feel ready to explore the art of hand building on your own. After this very basic introduction to the wheel, you may feel comfortable practicing the basics on your own. If you do not, you can repeat the basics series or take a private lesson.

Cost for the series: $160 (kiln firings, clay, & glaze are included)

Missed hand building or wheel classes can be made up for a fee. Please contact the studio to schedule. Missed glaze class can be made up by scheduling independent studio time and practicing with limited guidance from the studio host.

This one and a half hour class will teach you the basics of preparing your clay, using a slab roller, and techniques of molding and joining.

Part 1 - Hand Building

Become familiar with the wheel itself and how it operates. Learn the basic techniques of centering, making an opening, and pulling up the walls. You will also have some time to clean up the wheel and sand the pieces you made in week 1.

Part 2 - The Wheel

In this one and a half hour class you will become familiar with how to apply glaze to your custom pieces created in part one and part two.

Part 3 - Glazing

Wheel Support Lesson

This one hour lesson is perfect for those who have completed the pottery basic series and have purchased clay by the bag but still wish for some support with the wheel concepts of wedging, centering, coning, shaping, pulling up walls and trimming. "This one-hour class can be used to cover one or two specific wheel skills and can be scheduled as many times as desired to work through all the wheel skills.

The staff and support staff of the studio offer casual guidance for an hour while running independent studio time. The instruction is tailored to your needs specifically and is limited to one person at a time.

Cost for the 1 Hour lesson: $30

Advanced Wheel Series

This class is perfect for those who have completed the pottery basic series and mastered the basic skills of centering and pulling up the walls of 1-2 pound pieces. It is recommended that students taking this class have practiced the basic skills independently for 20-40 hours.

The class will meet for three sessions of instruction over three weeks. In addition to instruction during regularly scheduled class, students will be encouraged to come in to the studio for 1.5 hours each week to practice skills and to glaze some treasured pieces. The timing of these practice sessions are flexible and can be scheduled on the web by selecting "Independent Studio Time". There is no additional cost for the independent studio time.

Cost is $200 for the series of three classes and 3 practice sessions
